Marina del Rey started as a salt-marsh on the Westside of Los Angeles on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, just south of Venice Beach. The idea of a man-made marina on the land dates back to at least the start of the 20th century, but it took until 1953 for construction to begin. After more than a decade of development, Marina del Rey was dedicated on April 10, 1965.

Among the various neighborhoods that today make up Marina del Rey are the Marina del Rey Peninsula, Marina Strand Condos, Silver Strand Homes and Venice Canal Homes. They are surrounded by a variety of hotels, shops and restaurants.

Living in Marina del Rey provides a literal boat-load of opportunity. The marina itself has moorings for both pleasure craft and small boats and is considered virtual coastal playground for residents and visitors. Here you can enjoy various on-the-water activities, which in addition to boating includes includes things like stand-up paddle boarding and parasailing.

One of the main attractions of Marina del Rey is Fisherman’s Village, which is a waterfront mall and commercial boat anchorage modeled in the style of a traditional New England fishing village. There is a waterfront promenade that offers panoramic views of the harbor. Additionally, there are a variety of harbor-front dining options and several shops. Fisherman’s Village also has free concerts year-round.
